Kyle Church is a singer/songwriter from Medicine Hat, AB. Being a folk artist, he wanted his artwork to have a very organic feel to it. One of the main ideas he wanted to convey was that of a mountain. While we were digging through the lyrics in this EP, there were a lot of images of light/dark and life/death. We decided that a monochrome look to represent opposing nature of light and dark, along with hand-drawn imagery, was the direction to go.
Mountain From Above
Mountain Through Bars
With all of the concepts, I wanted to try and find a unique perspective on a mountain that could be expressed just by playing with light and dark. Both the Mountain Through Bars and Painted Peak concepts were trying to find how little information we need to identify the idea of a mountain.
But we both really enjoyed the concept of looking down on a mountain from above. It’s not a perspective we, as humans, get naturally. I wanted to create highlights and low-lights on the faces of the mountain that would naturally occur when the sun is shining on one side of the mountain, casting the opposite side in shadow.
Rigid Mountain – 3 Panels
Text on Top
We really liked the Mountain From Above concept as it was. So, we mostly just explored with colors, artwork rotation, and type treatments to find the cover we were after. I created a more rigid version of this concept, and designed it to span the 3 panels of the CD case. Ultimately, this layout didn’t get chosen, but it informed what we were going to do with the inside of the CD case.
We landed on keeping the original concept artwork, inverting the lights and dark, and rotating it 90 degrees. Sometimes, the first idea is the best and just needs to be played with.
The artwork on the inside of the case further clarifies the idea of a mountain. I wanted the artwork to interact with the lyrics instead of just being something in the background. It also further illustrates the differences of light and dark.
I had fantastic photographs to work with for the Pre-Order social media ads. They were taken by Wingtips Photography. You can check out their work at wingtipsphotography.com.
